Job Summary:
The Orthopedic Technologist I is a training position where the incumbent functions under the direct supervision of a physician or other designated staff to learn the appropriate orthopedic principals and procedures relating to application and removal of cast to upper and lower extremities, brace fitting and application, wound management and simple debridement, suture and staple removal, and application of a variety of removable orthopedic (soft goods) splints, slings, etc. Upon completion of training and demonstrating required competencies, incumbent is eligible for promotion to Orthopedic Technologist.

This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State of Tennessee/Georgia guidelines. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to coordinate care for patients and is trained and assigned to support patients/families/caregivers in self-management, self-efficacy and behavior change. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to manage the practices' patient population. Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.

Required: High school level of knowledge, with familiarity with anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, patient care processes.

Completion of 4 Hours of Erlanger Online Education specific to Total Ankle, Hip, and Knee Replacement upon hire (will be assigned by Department Leadership and/or Educator).

Department Position Summary:
Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the Adult Orthopedic office. Under direct supervision of a physician or designee, is in training to remove and apply splints and casts to the upper and lower extremities, properly fitting and applying Orthopedic braces, removing sutures and staples, and performing simple wound debridement, dressing changes and wound care. Demonstrates knowledge with various nursing assistant functions to include ability to take vital signs (TPR, BP), obtain patient history, perform patient transport and apply appropriate sterile techniques in all activities.. Demonstrates ability to cope with busy, stressful situations, follows instructions, organizes work, and deals with patients and fellow employees in a courteous, professional manner. Responsible for stocking and cleaning exam rooms following practice protocol, for cleaning clinical areas and instruments in accordance with practice, manufacturer and OSHA protocol. Responsible for preparing lab requisitions and culture samples.
