General Maintenance Technician

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Our scientists conduct research across a variety of disciplines, making groundbreaking discoveries about early human ancestors, ancient Ohio, animal and plant life around the world, and more. We steward more than 12,500 acres of wild habitats through our Natural Areas Program, working to protect the environment of northern Ohio and the diverse species that call it home.

The museum is seeking a dedicated professional to join our Facilities team.

Position Summary

The General Maintenance Technician conducts regular and preventative maintenance on building systems, including HVAC, electrical, and mechanical equipment. The Technician assists in troubleshooting Building Automation Systems and ensures proper operation of facility equipment. The Technician performs tasks such as lighting repairs, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, outdoor area maintenance, pest control, and seasonal snow and ice removal.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, pruning, fertilizing, pest and disease control, snow and ice removal, and clearing of debris from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and drainage areas
  • Operate and maintain a variety of vehicles, machinery, and tools such as pickup trucks, forklifts, tractors, sweepers, riding mowers, saws, trimmers, blowers, and sprayers in accordance with safety protocols
  • Conduct minor building repairs, including carpentry, plumbing, replacing interior and exterior light bulbs, and painting such as surface preparation, patching, and finishing
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of groundskeeping and building maintenance equipment to ensure proper functionality and safety
  • Handle delivery of supplies, materials, and equipment by verifying order details, loading delivery vehicles, and ensuring items are secure during transport
  • Accurately document work performed, materials used, and labor hours through the work order system. Provide timely updates on project progress and completion
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of experience in commercial or industrial maintenance required. Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance required.

Completion of a 2-year technical degree, technical apprenticeship program, vocational school program in HVAC/R or plumbing, or commercial maintenance training program, or possession of a current State of Ohio Stationary Engineer’s License preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Knowledge of general carpentry and repair, maintenance, plumbing, and electrical practices
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings

Working Conditions

This position includes prolonged periods of standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, crouching, or crawling. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, elevated heights, and chemicals. Must be able to regularly lift and move up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
