This Industrial Engineering Summer Internship at LIGHTERA seeks a college student in a technical engineering program. Job Description

We are currently seeking a college student enrolled in a technical engineering course of study who is interested in a summer internship opportunity. Our Cable Manufacturing department is looking for an Industrial Engineer Intern at our facility located in Avon, CT. 

Job Summary

The selected candidates will work under the guidance of senior engineers and project leaders, in their designated departments, on various projects within specialty optical fiber cable manufacturing.  Some of the specific projects include:

  • Assist in reviewing current‑state layout configurations to identify improvement opportunities related to throughput, ergonomics, standardization, and process capability.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and manufacturing teams to incorporate maintainability, safety, equipment access, and reliability considerations into layout planning activities.
  • Participate in tooling review and optimization efforts in coordination with Cable Engineering and Production teams.
  • Create and evaluate future state cable manufacturing layouts, addressing process flow, equipment placement, space utilization, and operational constraints.
  • Develop manufacturing layouts and supporting documentation using CAD‑based engineering tools (e.g., Autodesk Inventor and/or SolidWorks, Visio) to model equipment placement, layout concepts, and associated engineering details.

At the end of the internship, the candidate will prepare a presentation that summarizes the work they were involved in during the program.

Education Requirements

Candidate must be enrolled full-time in a college or university in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.  The ideal candidate will be in their junior or senior year of school. 

Experience

This is an entry-level internship position.  Computer skills and experience using Microsoft Windows applications necessary.
