The Police Academy officially begins on September 28th and lasts for twenty-one (21) weeks. Recruits who make it to the Academy attend Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. It is not a live-in facility, so recruits go home at the end of each day.

The first step is submitting an online questionnaire (aka the application). One (1) week after submitting (usually but give or take a few days), Police Recruiting staff will contact you regarding next steps in the process if you are chosen to move forward. The steps are as follows:

  1. Application
  2. Physical and written tests
    • National Police Officer Selection Test (POST) written test with 100 questions
    • 19 pushups in one (1) minute
    • 25 sit-ups in one (1) minute
    • Illinois Agility Run with a max time of 19.1 seconds
  3. Written boards
  4. Oral interview boards
  5. Interview with the Chief of Police
  6. Background investigation
  7. Job offer
  8. Testing 
    • Pension physicals
    • Psychological testing
    • Polygraph

Starting Salary: $68,481 (patrol top-out pay is $116,860)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Twenty-one (21) years of age (but less than 46 years of age at Academy start date)

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

  • Good physical condition
  • United States citizen

  • Oklahoma State Driver's License (or be able to obtain one)

  • Driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier

  • Excellent history of personal conduct, behavior, and employment
