Job Description

The Texas State Aquarium provides high quality, entertaining programming through education, conservation, and wildlife rehabilitation. We strive to provide our guests with an exciting, educational, and memorable experience.    The Marine Mammal Internship is an unpaid position that is designed to give college students and recent graduates an opportunity to learn about the care and training of marine mammals and who are interested in pursuing a career in the field. Interns will work directly and assist the Marine Mammal Training staff with all aspects of animal care and training with our Bottlenose Dolphins (tursiops truncatus) and North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis).    Responsibilities could include but are not limed to:
  • Maintenance of the exhibit
  • Food preparation
  • Daily cleaning/facility maintenance
  • Water quality
  • Interacting with the public, and participating in daily presentations.
  • Shadow trainers in husbandry, training, show, and enrichment sessions
  • May also assist in training, husbandry, and enrichment sessions as they gain experience
  • Create and Implement an original EED
  • Complete ABC’s of Animal Training
Requirements Degree Type Preferred: Marine Biology, Psychology, or similar degree
Hours per week: Must be able to work 40 hours per week including weekends and holidays 
Duration: 10-12 weeks
Requirements: Individuals should be enrolled in a college or university at a Junior or Senior level with good academic standing. No previous marine mammal experience is required but it is preferred. Must be able to work in harsh weather conditions, lift at least 40lbs, and climb stairs
