Job Description

The St. Louis Public Library’s Buder Branch has an opening for a full-time Information Specialist. The Library values the talents and perspectives that a diverse workforce brings and how this positively impacts our services and customer base. Our ideal candidate is someone who will connect the community to our resources to further our primary mission as a customer-centered public library providing vital services to the people of St. Louis.  The Information Specialist is enthusiastic, patient, and committed to providing excellent customer service and is comfortable working with the public and providing technology-related assistance. 

In this role you will:

  • Assist customers with library card registration and checking out and returning library materials.

  • Assist in preparation, delivery, and receipt of Library materials; receive payment from customers.

  • Provide technology assistance to customers with Library equipment.

  • Assist with daily housekeeping operations, projects, and opening and closing of the building

  • Assist with programming as needed.

  • Assist customers with Passport Applications upon completion of training. 

  • Assist customers with reference questions, utilizing the online catalog, and providing reader’s advisory services.

You will need to be:

  • Friendly, patient, and able to build relationships at all levels.

  • Able to see the big picture and promote consistency and excellence of service.

  • Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to questions from customers and staff

  • Flexible, positive, and willing to work with staff and colleagues to successfully overcome challenges.

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work with competing tasks and priorities.

You will need to have:

  • At least six months of customer service-related experience, or an associate’s degree, or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school. 

  • Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • The ability to complete the training to become a passport acceptance agent.  

  • Ability to learn and use technology as the Library continues to evolve 

  • Comfort with presenting to various audiences in order to execute unique and exciting events.

Hours for this position are:

40/week Mondays/Tuesdays 8:40 am - 5:15 pm, Wednesdays/Thursdays 11:40 am - 8:10 pm alternating Fridays/Saturdays 8:40 am - 5:10 pm, hours subject to change.

  • Originally built in 1922. Buder Library has moved twice since its original location.

  • 40,000 square feet

  • Offers public services on four levels

  • Collection size is 80,000 (includes juvenile and adult materials)

  • 4 meeting rooms (one auditorium, one community room, one smaller conference room, and a multipurpose room)

Located in the heart of the St. Louis South Hampton neighborhood in southwest St. Louis, the Buder Library is a vital community anchor surrounded by popular shops and restaurants. This branch serves as a central hub for lifelong learning, offering quiet study areas, reservable meeting rooms, and an extensive collection of books and media. With dedicated programming for all ages—including children's activities and literacy initiatives—the library is committed to fostering health, education, and social connection within the neighborhood.

About the neighborhood:

Buder is part of St. Louis Hills, a dynamic and busy neighborhood situated in the southwest area of St. Louis. In 2018, Buder celebrated its 20-year anniversary at Hampton Ave and Sutherland Ave, surrounded by a thriving retail and restaurant scene. The neighborhood has a large number of families with young children, a strong Bosnian community and an increasingly multicultural population.
