Monday–Friday | Between 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The Alexandria Area YMCA is hiring Day Camp Counselors to help create a safe, fun, and meaningful summer experience for local youth. As a counselor, you’ll build relationships, lead activities, and serve as a positive role model for campers every day.

SCHEDULE & PAY:

  • Monday–Friday
  • Shifts scheduled between 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
  • Seasonal Full-Time or Part-Time 
  • $15.00-$16.00 per hour 
  • Non-Exempt Position
     

No weekends required.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

 As a Day Camp Counselor, you will:

  • Supervise and actively engage with a group of children 
  • Lead games, activities, and creative programming
  • Ensure a safe and clean camp environment 
  • Build positive, nurturing relationships with campers 
  • Communicate effectively with parents and staff 
  • Model YMCA values in every interaction 
  • Follow YMCA policies including child abuse prevention, safety, and emergency procedures 
  • Attend staff meetings and required trainings
  • Support the Day Camp Lead and Youth Coordinator as needed
     

This role is hands-on, high-energy, and incredibly rewarding.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent (college experience preferred)
  • Experience working with children in group settings preferred
  • Experience in outdoor activities, sports, music, skits, aquatics, or recreation preferred 
  • Must be at least 16 years old (per YMCA and state guidelines) 
  • CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire 
  • Strong communication skills and a positive attitude
  • Ability to work with diverse populations

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 This is an active role that requires:

  • Leading indoor and outdoor activities 
  • Walking, standing, bending, lifting, and sitting on the ground 
  • Participating in water activities and swimming
  • Keeping up with energetic campers in a fast-paced environment
