2026 Summer Intern - Sequencing Hardware Development

Department Summary
We are seeking a characterization engineer intern in the complex consumable device development team. This team member will work on characterizing and developing methods suited for medical diagnostic products, including but not limited to surface, bulk, mechanical, electrochemical, and material properties to enable nanopore based sequencing technology, and to discover correlations between in-line parametric, measurement data, and process parameters, with final sequencing results.
This internship position is located in Santa Clara, on-site
The Opportunity
Collaborate with other team members in a wide range of activities, including, but not limited to execution or sample preparation for: failure analysis, material, surface, electrochemical, biocompatibility, mechanical characterizations, and nanopore sequencing
Support development and documentation of procedures and processes needed within the sequencing system
Support methods development, documentation and execution for validation and verification efforts
Participate in requirements generation through formal design development procedures from customer requirements through unit specifications
Write technical reports and documentations, present findings to internal and external audiences as necessary
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are
Required Education
You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors:
Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Engineering, or Natural Science major.
Required Skills:
Knowledge in materials, mechanical, surface, analytical, or electrochemical characterizations is required.
Hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment is required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Exposure to design of experiments, data analysis, and statistics (JMP, Minitab, etc) is preferred.
Proficiency with programming languages for data analysis (R, python) is preferred
Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $45.00-$50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
