POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides students who are currently enrolled in a master's program for Occupational Therapy the opportunity to develop technique and enhance their skills as clinicians at Starfish Family Services through outpatient, preschool, and/or community-based settings. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a master's degree program for Occupational Therapy with an accredited college or university.
  • Students must have an interest in developing their clinical skills to work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school aged children, and their families.  

Level 1 Fieldwork Objectives:

  • Adheres to safety guidelines and standard precautions to maintain safety of client and self.
  • Identifying the theory and treatment principles underlying assessment and treatment of patients in a therapeutic setting.
  • Beginning skills in assessment and treatment including administering appropriate assessments under supervision, treatment planning for identified deficits, and treatment implementation under supervision.
  • Communicating effectively and appropriately in verbal and written reporting in accordance with the policy of the program.
  • Problem solving in treatment selection and implementation.
  • Ability, desire, and motivation to work cooperatively with fieldwork supervisor, as well as colleagues and other agency staff.
  • Must abide with all SFS confidentiality policies.
  • Ability to relate to all members of the community regardless of race, age, gender, and cultural or ethnic background.
  • Willingness to work positively and cooperatively with supervisor, colleagues, and all other agency personnel.
  • Must demonstrate compassion and sensitivity and respect the privacy and special needs of clients.
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Ability to represent the agency in a professional manner.
  • Must maintain ethical and professional standards.

Student Responsibilities:

If possible, perform the following in accordance with the standards at your facility:

•     Assist with one or more assessments.

•     Assist in the development of treatment plan addressing identified areas of occupational dysfunction.

•     Document progress of client(s) in relation to established treatment goals per directions of field supervisor.

•     Participate as actively and independently as possible in therapeutic processes.

•     Maintain a daily log as a means of reflecting upon observations and academic/clinical learning.

•     Complete a site evaluation form at the end of the fieldwork experience and discuss it with supervisor.

  LICENSING AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Valid driver’s license and / or reliable transportation.
