Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Registered Nurse to join our team!

JOB SUMMARY:       

Oncology Nurses are registered nurses who specialize in the treatment and care of patients with cancer through all aspects of their journey. In addition to the usual nursing roles of giving medicine, observing patients and help with diagnostic tests, oncology nurses may supervise chemotherapy or radiation treatments. They may teach patients and their families about the disease and its treatment. Because of their specialized knowledge of the care of cancer patients, oncology nurses often serve as resources to other staff members. Nursing work can be physically taxing, and you risk injury from lifting patients and moving equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Infusion Patients:
   1. Review doctor’s orders for medications to be administered and labs to be drawn.
   2. Verify if preauthorization is needed.
   3. Complete nursing assessment of patient.
   4. Start IV or access central line and obtain laboratory tests per written policies.
   5. Run CBC and record, review any concerns from CBC or assessment with physician.
   6. Collect premedication from the Lynx machine and prepare.
   7. Administer pre-medications as ordered. 
   8. Double check calculated dosages with another nurse.
   9. Safely administer medications to patients ordered and according to written pharmaceutical instructions and written policies.
   10. Administer supportive medications as ordered.
   11. Monitor patient for signs and symptoms of allergic reaction or side effects to medication being administered.
   12. Meet patient’s needs for comfort and safety.
   13. Teach patient regarding treatments being administered and answer questions.
   14. Review home medications and antiemetic with patients, call prescriptions into pharmacy as necessary.
   15. Before infusions and during while medications are being infused, assess line for patency and signs or symptoms of infiltration.
   16. Document care given, assessments, patient’s response and teaching.
2. New Infusion Patients:
   1. Comfort patient as necessary and familiarize patient and family with facilities.
   2. Review physician’s orders.
   3. Go over teaching packet regarding management of side effects of chemotherapy.  Give patient medication information according to medications ordered.  Review above information with patient and family and answer questions.
   4. Obtain a signed consent for administration of chemotherapy.
   5. Administer chemotherapy as noted above.
3. Assist doctors in rooms as needed for breast exams, procedures, lab draws and injections.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:  Graduate of an accredited RN program.  Current RN licensure in the state of Idaho.  Current BLS and ACLS certification and renewal as required.  Successful completion of PALS course within 7 months of hire date and renewal as required. Complete the basic dysrhythmia class with a grade of 84% or higher within 6 months of hire date, if no prior telemetry experience.

Experience:  Nursing experience in med-surg, ICU or ER is desired. Chemotherapy administration experience is a bonus. Chemotherapy / Biotherapy Course certification is required within 3 months of hire.

Equipment/Technology:  Basic computer knowledge.

Language/Communication:  Must have the ability to effectively read, write, and speak English.

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers.  Able to calculate correct doses by applying necessary formulas as needed.

Mental Capabilities:  Ability to problem solve and handle stressful situations. Time management skills and the ability to prioritize patient care is a must.

Interpersonal:  Ability to work well with others.

Performance:  Demonstrates ability to safely provide expected patient care—demonstrates ability to safely perform lab draws and provide information regarding patient care to other team members.
