Recreational Therapy Intern Job Description

  1. Job Summary

The Activity Therapy Intern I assist with all aspects of Recreation Therapy, a service designed to meet the physical, emotional, social, cultural, recreation, and rehabilitation needs of all residents.

  1. Essential Functions
  1. Ensures resident safety during all activities.
  2. Organizes and supervises across various communities.
  3. Assists or fills in for recreational therapist or other aides
  4. Attends Treatment Team Planning and Critical Reviews as assigned.
  5. Assists in planning and implementing special events.
  6. Ensures resident hygiene needs are met by completing requisition forms for necessary items.
  7. Shops for hygiene supplies.
  8. Ensure residents receive hair care services within allotted time frame.
  9. Ensure requisition for hair care services (male and female) is submitted in a timely manner.
  10. Create and maintain recreation bulletin boards.
  11. Serves as liaison between barber and cosmetologist.
  12. Maintain cleanliness of supplies utilized for weekly hygiene groups.
  13. Ensures monthly email outlining important dates within the department is created and sent via email.
  14. Participates in staff in-service and training programs.

  3. Demonstrates knowledge of the rights of children and adolescents as patients in this facility.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, referral sources and the general public.
  5. Must have proven ability to relate to and work with children and/or adolescents.
  6. All Recreational Therapist must have a current C.T.R.S. certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation.  Activity Therapy Aides do not require this certification.

VI.       Organizational Relationships

  1. This position reports to the Director of Recreation Therapy/Lead Recreation Therapist/Activity Therapist.
  2. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

VII.     Qualifications

  1. Minimum Qualification: High School diploma or equivalent.
  1. Environmental Factors
  1. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  1. Requires working out of doors on a year-round basis resulting in exposure to environmental elements such as heat and cold.
  1. This position falls under Category II of the OSHA Infection Control Program.  Under Category II, the tasks associated with this position call for the performance of unplanned Category I tasks.  This position requires a thorough knowledge of the proper use of personal protective clothing and equipment and training in Universal Precautions, barrier protection techniques and modes of transmission of blood-borne viruses.

IX.  Facility Specific Functions

  1. The Activity Therapy Intern report to the Lead Recreation Therapist in the absence of the Director or Recreation.
  2. Completes weekly notes regarding resident progress in the event of CTRS vacancy.
  3. Assists in the cleaning of the recreation closets and outside areas.

X.        Essential Physical Characteristics Profile:

Area of Specific Concern:      This position requires an ability to stay awake and remain alert during an entire shift.

Responsibilities:
•    Assist in proving accurate information regarding resident progress to the Lead Recreation Therapist and the Treatment Team.
•    assist in resident safety during all activities.
•     assist with organizing, implements, and supervises Recreation Therapy activities in accordance with the treatment plan.
•    Attends Treatment Team Planning and Critical Reviews as assigned to assist with assuring communications are maintained between residential, clinical, and administrative staff regarding recreation services.
•    assist with plans to organize, organization and help with implementing special events.
•    assist  with ensuring resident hygiene needs are met by completing requisition forms for necessary items including hair cut/cosmetology needs, and monitors resident hygiene boxes for cleanliness. Also ensures all hygiene items are given to resident at time of admission.
•    Assist with creating and posting monthly calendar detailing recreation schedule/activities.
