Description of Work

This Correctional Officer position works as a K-9 Handler. This position is assigned to the Division of Operations; however, the work stie is located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, Bertie County NC. The position may be utilized anywhere in the State.

Correctional Officer II (K-9 Handler)

This Correctional Officer position works as a K-9 Handler. This position is assigned to the Division of Operations; however, the work site is located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, Bertie County NC. The position may be utilized anywhere in the State. Position responsibilities also include: 

Responsible for cell phone, narcotics, and/or bloodhound canines. Will participate in the following:

Drug interdictions & facility searches involving narcotic detection and/or cellphone canines.

Fugitive operations using tracking bloodhounds.

Multi-agency tasks force as necessary.

Responsible for the training and utilization of all canines and will perform training exercises at least twice per week utilizing a variety of training conditions and methods. Responsible for the wellbeing of canines assigned to them, as well as the canines housed at Bertie Correctional Institution to include the cleanliness of the canines and the kennels.   Responsible for the daily care and feeding of the canines, ensuring appropriate medical care, and maintaining a record of the Canine's medical history. Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of an assigned vehicle and equipment. Will respond to emergencies requiring the use of a canine, as well as planned searches. Required to be on-call for a week at a time on a rotating basis with three other K-9 handlers. Must be able to travel on an overnight basis and must be able to work hours that often extend beyond a normal eight-hour day, Monday-Friday schedule. Work environment:

Frequent exposure to external weather during interdictions, facility searches, tracking and training exercises.

Will have contact with the offender population, which can pose a degree of risk.  

Must operate a motor vehicle on a frequent basis, which also exposes the employee to driving hazards.

Utilizes personal computer, smartphones, copiers, scanners and fax machines. Must be familiar with cellular telephone, 2-way mobile radio, VIPER and operation of a pickup type motor vehicle. Must participate in Annual in-service training and any specialized training required for handler/canine certification.  The candidate for this position must live within 45 minutes of Bertie Correctional Institution.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum Education and Experience for a Trainee Appointment High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
