Job Description

Rock West Composites, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Intern. 

Rock West Composites, Inc. is an engineering and manufacturing company dedicated to providing innovative solutions for commercial, academic and government customers.  This position is located at our San Diego, CA location and reports to the Quality Manager.

Position Summary:

Gain engineering knowledge while supporting multiple departments including: Manufacturing Engineering, Program Management, and Production groups. You will spend approximately 8 to 12 weeks within a single department or across multiple department to gain exposure to the world of Composites, including Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Project Management.

Essential Functions: 
Engineering interns are assigned to one or more work cells and will perform a variety of tasks based on project scope, department objectives, and area of assignment.

Manufacturing tasks:

  • Work within program teams to learn and support the processes and manufacturing flow through a manufacturing facility
  • Work with different material and processes to understand the role played by manufacturing engineers in support of manufacturing operations on a daily basis.

Manufacturing Engineering tasks:

  • Work with current ME's to learn and support ongoing ME processes and procedures.
  • Learn and utilize basic ME functions in support of current programs.
  • Interrogate engineering drawings, Generate and issue Work Instructions in support of Manufacturing programs

Quality tasks:

  • Work with Quality Assurance to understand the interactions that QS plays in the daily production operations and how they are applied at the manufacturing level
  • Support coordination efforts of disposition of nonconforming materials/hardware
  • Research and review AS9100 standards 
  • Provide support with the following: document control, nonconforming materials, Process controls, receiving inspection, visual inspection, and training

Project Management tasks:

  • Work with the Program Management and/or Business Development team to learn and support the execution of a project from proposal through completion.
  • Gain a technical understanding of engineering trades and their effects on the success of a project.
  • Learn the interdependencies between functional groups on a project’s execution and how decisions directly affect its cost, schedule, and performance.

Internship Presentation:

  • Upon completion of internship candidate must present a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the following:
    • Provide an overview of what he/she learned during the 8-12 weeks of internship
    • Provide recommendations for improvements of processes, procedures, and overall manufacturing operations 

Non-Essential Functions: 

  • Other duties as assigned 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Working towards a bachelor's degree 
  • Strong organizational and attention to details skills 
  • Strong time management skills 
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and MS Project
  • Knowledge of CAD Software and understanding of mechanical drawings  

Compensation:

The hourly compensation is $20 per hour.
