Job Description

Hours: 8:00 - 5:00 Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week (occasional weekend and alternate hours)

The Public Health Nurse I will provide client services in Communicable Disease (CD) areas which include immunizations, communicable disease follow up, Tuberculosis (TB) testing and follow up, HIV testing and counseling and outbreak management using federal, state, and local laws to support public health intervention and practice in addition to providing education for peers and agencies within the community. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluate immunization records and administer vaccines 
  • Perform and interpret PPD readings 
  • Perform the investigation and follow-up of communicable diseases and input information into NCEDSS 
  • Answer telephone calls from patients 
  • Provide HIV testing and counseling to clients 
  • Participate in public health planning and response 

Education/Experience: Graduation from an accredited nursing school, BSN preferred. Public health clinical rotation during nursing school; public health or communicable disease experience preferred. 

License: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license. Public Health nurses must complete the introduction to Public Health Nursing course within the first six months of employment and complete the North Carolina Credentialed Public Health Nurse Certification Course once a cohort becomes available. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of the law surrounding immunization and communicable disease reporting, and enforcement responsibilities 
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, nursing theory and practices, general medicine and programmatic requirements of funding sources, and administrative understanding of the public health nurse role 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions 
  • Ability to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information, and to maintain effective working relationships

Classes and programs are offered at the CHA headquarters in Kannapolis and throughout Cabarrus County in neighborhood centers, churches and other facilities.
